Cabela is Navajo for Death
Seriously, what is Cabela’s? Is it a store? Is it a museum? Is it an armory begging for a little tactical warfare from PETA? It’s probably all three, depending on who you are.
Jodi and I visited the new store in Buda (pronounced byoo-duh). They have their own water tower, a large aquarium, a huge mid-store mountain of taxidermy, and no less than three rooms dedicated to the display of animals brought to their timely deaths by the owners of Cabela’s high powered weaponry. They have a room where youngsters can shoot pellet guns at targets, a waterfall, a live archery range, a cafe, and a pond next to that mid-store mountain.
So, I ask again, what is Cabela’s? They do have some items you can buy. Among them were fishing poles, guns, some poles for fishing, some rifles, rods and reels, some six-shooters, and I think maybe they had some bait. Oh yeah, and some other things, like a double-barrelled chicken cooker.
The store had dedicated half of the available floor space to displays of wildlife mercy killings (I assume they were mercy killings…or maybe all those animals committed a heinous crime.) My theory is that Cabela’s intends for kiddos to come in and be amazed by all the wonderful fish and displays, and remember all the fun they had when it comes time to bring their own offspring to a giant monument of death and capitalism. Look, kids! An exciting dead elk!
So, you might get the sense that I’ll not be making any trips to Cabela’s anytime soon. The magnitude of the store and the enormity of the displays can only mean one thing: 500% markup. Look at us, we’re great! Will that be cash or *snicker*…err…credit?

Dear OhMyHead,
Cabela’s is an experience as well as it’s own zip code (I’m not sure about that last part, but it should be). You’ll notice that the Byoo’-dah water tower next door has a Cabela’s logo….maybe that’s to help run the various water features in Cabela’s World?
I don’t mean to sound cynical about the store, though. I visited and was quite impressed by the overall experience. I also noticed that they have a large array of used hunting rifles and shot guns at some pretty reasonable prices.
