Lonnie’s Cajun Quail Eggs

by mike on April 17th, 2005

fishinFriday night, my friend and old roommate Keith and I went up to see another friend and old roommate Darin to celebrate his last few days as a bachelor. What a great time! His friend Nathan had set us up on a guided fishing trip at Lake Bridgeport northwest of Fort Worth. Ken was our guide. We managed to haul in fourteen fish; thirteen white bass, and one 20″ hybrid. Prior to this, my only reference of fishing was throwing the line and waiting for the bobber to move. Apparently there is a whole science to it, and if you have the right equipment, you can haul in whatever you feel like. At one point, we had four of the five rods each pulling in a white bass.
Darin was given a Barbie doll fishing pole, which he flatly refused to use. We got a few shots of him opening it though.

The fun part for me, however, was getting to hang out with him and Kathleen, and really experiencing the Texas culture. It started with the muddy ice tea at Dairy Queen on the ride up. Then Keith and I took a slight wrong turn, and stopped at Carl’s Corner, a town/truck stop. I think was a highway intersection first, truck stop second, and town third. You can imagine the clientelle. This place had twenty-seven ceiling fans in it. The product on the shelves was coated in such a thick layer of dust, I couldn’t read some of the labels. They had a rack of t-shirts that were all black and all Willie Nelson (he’s from there, so this is somewhat excusable). Wow. (I love this stuff!)
So then we went fishin. Not fishing. Fishin. Had a big fish fry up later, which is normal in most parts of the country. Here comes the fun part. Now I’ve had frog legs before, but never one as big as a chicken leg. These things were huge. I didn’t know we had frogs this big this side of the Atlantic. The kicker though was the home-canned jar of Lonnie’s Cajun Quail Eggs. I was relieved to know they were purchased for the novelty, though I’m sure Lonnie doesn’t intend for her fine produce to be used as a joke at some Texan’s bachelor party. My belly is bigger and wiser.
Congratulations Darin and Kathleen! I really liked the house. I think it’s perfect for you! I hope God blesses you richly in your marriage!
Pictures are up!

  1. Willie actually won Carl’s Corner in a poker game. Sounds like it’s back in Carl’s hands now, though. His hometown is actually a little south of the Corner.
