Travel by saucer sled

by mike on January 10th, 2004

Ok, I had another weird dream, so I had to write it down because it’s fairly bizarre. Usually my dreams are strange, but incorporate things that could actually happen; no 20-foot 7-eyed fire-breathing guppies or anything.
To the dream. For some reason, I had decided to travel through Indiana in the winter via saucer sled (I don’t know my source or my destination.) I remember getting a couple miles from my source and having second thoughts. I was sitting in the saucer sled, pushing myself along over the snow and ice, and realizing that this probably was not the best means of travel. The next thing I remember thinking, though, was that I was already committed and well beyond the point of no return. Push on!
At this point I’m crossing a large suspension bridge over the Mississippi river in Gary, Indiana. (For you geography scholars, the Mississippi does go through Gary in this dream!) I get to the other side, and start going down a one-lane portion of it. This section of road has concrete side walls because it’s elevated. The road surface is covered with at least an inch of ice and the tops of the sidewalls are about 70% covered with ice. Initially, I used the saucer to get about 67mph down this portion of road, but then I had to start pushing again. So now there are cars coming down behind me. They are bouncing off the sidewalls because of the ice, and I have to be particularly careful to jump up on the sidewalls to avoid being run over, all while not falling over the edge onto the rock-hard frozen Mississippi river 40 feet below.
While dodging these sliding cars, I glance over to my left and see four trucks driving across a frozen eddy to the side of the river. They were each cargo trucks of a different size. Then I noticed beyond these trucks were a pack of black dogs with their husband and wife owners bounding through an unfrozen section. As I continued pushing myself along in my saucer sled, I approached a section of road that was not elevated, and the dogs ran up the embankment to greet me. Then I woke up.
On the reality side of things, I’m heading out to my dad’s house today to finish a table I’ve been working on. Hopefully I’ll get all the construction elements done today, and be able to bring it back home to stain and seal it.
