ILoveMe Gym

by mike on January 19th, 2004

It’s been a while, so I thought I’d post an update on a few things. First, the wedding plans…
We found a cake! Woohoo! Shirley Slaughter is doing our cake for us. She works out of her home in central Austin, and has been doing this for 30 years. She was referred to us by one of Jodi’s co-workers, so we went down there and talked with her for a bit, liked what we heard and tasted, and signed her up on the spot. She will be the maker and deliverer of the cake. I like the personal attention, but I’m a bit worried about her being able to find my dad’s place. It’s not easy to get there. As long as she gets an early start, I think she’ll be fine. She has all our phone numbers too.
Our out-of-town invitations are completely ready to go; even sealed. All we have to do now is send them, which I think Jodi will do sometime next week. The others just need checked and sealed and sent a couple weeks after that.
We added table linens to our list of rental items, so that part of the planning is done now too.
Basically, we just have to plan the ceremony. It’s the little last minute things that are really gonna get us now though; like drinks at the reception, food at the rehearsal, clothes for the toddler attendants, etc. fun. I’m ready already.
On a personal note, I joined Gold’s Gym over the weekend. I used to go to Hyde Park Gym, but since Jodi and some other friends go to Gold’s, it’s closer, and I get a great membership rate because of my employment at IBM, I went ahead and joined. I like Hyde Park because it was quiet (they don’t play any music, unlike Gold’s which cranks up the nastiest garbage on their music video monitors…imagine being subjected to Boy George in an electronic video dancing next to a Michael Jackson impersonator and a goat at 6:45 in the morning, which is what I had the pleasure of experiencing today…yeesh). Hyde Park was full of people who go to work out, and my experience at the old Gold’s (when it was World’s) was that people tend to go there to be seen. HP also has a pro bodybuilder owner, Dave Goodin, and other pros hanging around, and they’re willing to advise you on form and nutrition and stuff. Dave and the gym are dedicated to “natural” bodybuilding; no steroids or illegal growth substances allowed (which of course I would never use anyway). It’s nice to see folks who are in love with more than their bodies, though that’s debatable even at HP. I didn’t have to wait at HP for equipment either. Gold’s, on the other hand, is very busy, so I’m gonna try to meet my best man at 6:30am M-Th. We’ll see how long that lasts. It’ll be better once the wedding is over and I’m living closer to the gym. At least the cost and location are nice.
Ok, back to work, Mike!

  1. I was unsure what “music video monitors” you were referring to, until I went to Gold’s yesterday. It was my first time to go this year, so up till now then my eyes had yet to see the “Gold’s Gym Network” MTV-ish abomination.
    Ugh.
