Junior Brown

by mike on December 14th, 2003

So, Jodi and I went down to the Junior Brown concert at Gruene Hall last night. Gruene Hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas, and it shows. It’s not insulated — the place is heated by old wood-burning stoves, where chilled women spend most of the night unless they wear their down parkas and double-thick wool socks. (Why are you women so cold all the time?) That’s the appeal of course, and they sell out a bunch of their shows and make a bunch of money.
We made a point to be right up front during Junior. We were literally within about 5 feet of JB, and way too close to the speakers. The show was good — my only complaint about it was that sometimes he just goes nuts on his guitar. He wants to improvise and jam. I think sometimes he gets going so much that he forgets what “real” song he started with. At one point, he play about a 25 minute medley of Hendrix. That’s cool, but I went to see JB, not JH.
Good show though! I recommend it.
